We all love our voice assistants—Siri, Alexa, Google Assistant—they’ve become part of our daily lives, making things a little more convenient with just a simple “Hey, Siri.” But there’s a question lurking behind these helpful digital companions: Is Siri racist?

Okay, hold up—it’s not as wild as it sounds. This question taps into a growing concern about the bias embedded in these technologies, especially when it comes to accents. Specifically, are these assistants favoring people who speak with a certain type of accent—mainly “white” or American accents? And what does that say about how inclusive these systems really are?

Well, that’s where the technology is developed. Plus, the U.S. and U.K. are massive markets for these companies, so of course, they’re going to focus on what works best for those users.


When Tech Gets It Wrong

Now, you might be thinking, "What’s the big deal? Can’t people just speak more clearly or slow down for Siri?" But imagine this: you’re in an emergency, trying to call for help using Siri, and the assistant keeps misunderstanding you because of your accent. It’s not just annoying—it’s dangerous.

On a day-to-day level, this bias makes people feel left out. They have to repeat themselves, speak slower, or modify their accent just to get a basic task done, like setting a reminder or playing music. Meanwhile, native American English speakers enjoy smooth, glitch-free interactions.


So, Is Siri Actually Racist?

Calling Siri “racist” is a bit of a stretch, but there’s definitely bias in how these systems treat accents. Racism implies intentional discrimination, and that’s not what’s happening here. But the fact that these voice assistants work better for some accents than others? That’s a reflection of deeper issues in how technology is built.
